ABOUT KAYSERI

Kayseri, one of the world’s ancient cities (Mazaka, Caesarea), was part of the region known as Cappadocia during the Roman period. The region was located north of the Kızılırmak River and extended from Lake Tuz to the Euphrates River. As the Silk Road passed through this area, it attracted the attention of many nations and became the cradle of numerous civilizations.

Today, Kayseri is one of the developed cities of Central Anatolia. Kültepe Mound, located approximately 20 km from the city center, is known as an ancient settlement surrounding Kayseri. Kaniš, the former capital of Kayseri, maintained its importance from around 2800 BC until the Hellenistic period. The Karum (commonly known as a “marketplace”), located near Kültepe, was established by Assyrian merchants. Archaeological excavations that began in 1948 are still ongoing today. During these excavations, more than 20,000 cuneiform tablets were discovered, providing invaluable evidence of the period. These tablets contain records of commercial relations, agreements, and correspondence. Artifacts from the Ancient Bronze Age, the Assyrian Trade Colonies Period, and the Hittite Era have been uncovered during the excavations and are exhibited at the Archaeology Museum in the city center.

Kayseri Castle, Hunat Mosque and Madrasah, Gevher Nesibe Madrasah (surrounded by the Seljuk Museum), Döner Kümbet, Karatay Han, Sultan Han, Çifte Kümbet, Hacı Kılıç Mosque, and Kurşunlu Mosque are among the most important historical monuments. Most of these landmarks are located in the city center. Sultan Marshes, Kapuzbaşı Waterfalls, Soğanlı Valley, and the Ağırnas Underground City are among the natural beauties of Kayseri.

Mount Erciyes, with an elevation of 3,917 meters and recognized as one of Türkiye’s volcanic mountains, is located in Kayseri. The ski resort on Mount Erciyes is one of the most important ski centers in Türkiye. Skiing on the snowy slopes of Mount Erciyes during winter offers visitors an enjoyable and memorable experience. Erciyes Ski Resort is approximately 25 km away from Erciyes University.

In addition to its historical and touristic attractions, Kayseri is also noteworthy for its accommodation options and rich cuisine. Alongside five-star hotels located in the city center, there are also numerous three- and four-star hotels offering comfortable stays. In addition to its famous pastrami and sausage, Kayseri is renowned for local delicacies such as mantı, su böreği, katmer, yağlama, kurşunaşı, bazlama, fırınağzı, arabaşı, aside, nevzine, and sarma.

With a population of approximately 1,434,357, Kayseri has made significant progress in industry and manufacturing. As a well-established industrial city, Kayseri is widely recognized for its renowned national and international brands.

Kayseri is also an important center for higher education, hosting several public and private universities, including Erciyes University, Kayseri University, Abdullah Gül University, and Nuh Naci Yazgan University.

The city has produced many prominent business leaders and high-ranking public officials. Notably, Abdullah Gül, the 11th President of the Republic of Türkiye, and Derviş Eroğlu, former President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, are both natives of Kayseri.

Kayseri offers strong transportation infrastructure, with 16 daily direct flights to Istanbul and Antalya, as well as daily direct flights to Germany and the Netherlands. In addition, the city is well connected through developed highway and railway networks, ensuring easy and efficient access.

Kayseri Airport is located 6 kilometers from the city center and approximately 10 kilometers from Erciyes University, with travel times of 5 to 10 minutes by car.

Kayseri is also situated 70 kilometers from Cappadocia, offering convenient access via well-developed roads to world-famous destinations such as Ürgüp and Göreme, where visitors can explore the iconic fairy chimneys and enjoy breathtaking views through hot air balloon tours.
